General Douglas MacArthur landed in Macabalan Wharf aboard PT 41 boat under the command of Lieutenant John Duncan Bulkeley. Extremely pleased with Bulkeley’s effort to steer their boat clear from the sight of their Japanese enemies, Gen. MacArthur reportedly declared, “Bulkeley, I’m giving every officer and man here the Silver Star for Gallantry. You’ve taken me out of the jaws of death and I wont forget it.” A Cagayanon, then Capt. Fidencio Laplap, now 87 years old and still alive, is one of those who were later awarded the Silver Star for gallantry promised by Gen. MacArthur. After landing at the Macabalan Wharf, MacArthur, together with his family and military entourage then proceeded to Del Monte Clubhouse for his departure to Australiaon a B-17 Flying Fortress where he made the famous declaration, “Upon orders of the President of the United States, I came through the Japanese blockade, and I shall return.”

Gaston Park

jcp-8(Source)

Named after a pre-war Municipal Mayor of Cagayan de Oro, Segundo Gaston, the park is located near the St. Augustine Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace. Gaston Park was the main plaza of Cagayan de Misamis  during  the  Spanish  colonial period. It served as the training ground of local patriots during the Philippine-American War. Later it became the site of the Battle of Cagayan de Misamis on April 7, 1900. A National Historical Institute marker was placed in the park  in 2000.

On one side of the park, the one near San Agustin Cathedral, a marker was erected in memory of Kagay-anons who lost their lives when Typhoon Sendong heaped its fury on the city back in December of 2011.

Mambuaya Cave (formerly Monigue Cave)

The cave is located in barangay Mambuaya this city; the cave entrance is flowing water from underground stream. The cave has a small opening that seems too narrow to be passable, it has a six inches airspace between ceiling and water that you have submerge yourselves one by one, equipped with a helmet and a waterproof cap lamp. It contains a beautiful sparkling formation, which is called the Calcium Carbonates (CaCO3) or Calcites. These stalactites and stalagmites, white and brown, are sign of oxidized materials that take 50 to 60 years to form an inch the cave is definitely spellbinding. There were formations of flowstone, gurpool-resembling, rice terraces, transparent crystals and picturesque speleothems, such as cathedral drapes and icons.

It would be best to join a tour group when decided to explore Monigue Cave. You can contact hotels and whitewater rafting outfitters around the city or get in touch with the City Tourism Office. This is for the reason that traveling from the highway to the exact cave site is quite rough. You can also register as a guest at the Mambuaya Barangay Hall to get assisted. (Source)

Kweba de Oro (Cueba de Oro) is a rather difficult spelunking trip. The entrance requires a 40m deep abseil to get in. On the other hand this difficulty prevented damages of the cave by vandals. The cave is a river cave and thus the visitors will definitely get wet. The most difficult places are where the ceiling almost reaches the surface of the water, only a few centimeters of air between them. And of course the exit, which is an sump. It is necessary to dive a short distance, to reach the sunlight of a small pond, the resurgence of the cave river. Guides on both sides of the sump help the visitors to find the exit.
